Coach D's Web Page Coach D's Science and Health Information

Hello and welcome to my web page. This web page was created to help keep parents informed of what is going on in my classroom. You can check my daily blog to see what we did in Science class and Health class for that day. Also if you included your e-mail address on your child's Blue Sheet at the first of the year, then I have entered them on my website Email center and when important things happen or information you need to know, I will send out emails. Also please subscribe to my webpage as well. If you are absent on a certain day, you can check the blog to see what you missed and if any homework was assigned. Please check  this website for additional forms that you need to be aware of. Here is my class schedule for this fall unless something changes upon our return in the fall: Monday thru Thursday we will have Science class, Friday's we will have Health class.

This year we will be incorporating STEM in the 6th grade Science and Math classes. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. Please be aware that this is the second year and we will all be learning together. I am looking forward into being able to expand on certain subjects that interest my students. I might be asking from time to time for you to donate items to help reinforce what we are learning in class as well in our STEM activities.

I will be using Discovery Education (Science Tech Book). I will be assigning students review lessons. These will appear the week prior or the week of our Science Test on the subject that we are covering in Science. This is for review only and I will continue to handout Study Guides for the tests as well. Your child should know their user name and password as they are going to be using these regularly in all classes this year. If you have questions, please contact me. Thanks!

9-21-17 - Science and Field Trip

Today in Coach D's Science classes we watched a CIPA required video: My Media.
Students then wrote down examples of Media they use daily and then wrote down an estimated of time (minutes) they are on each media site or item. They then divided the minutes by 60 to get the hours they are on Media.
We then had them add all the minutes for their pod for each media example and then divide by 60 and they then used that information to create a bar graph.

The rest of the afternoon we were on a field trip to Environmental Field Day (left at 11:30 and returned around 2:30 p.m..).

Today in Coach D's Science classes we did the following:

- all three classes were given time to complete/finish the Color/Cut-n-Past Activity from Monday's class. If they were not able to get it completed in class they can complete it at home by one of two ways: (1) going to my website and clicking on Coach D's Science and scroll down until they find the PDF Chapter 9 Earth, Moon and Sun - click on it and it should pull up all the information that we have done in class. You can print it out or just view it. If you do not have a printer at home but a personal computer, Ipad etc. you can look up Solstices and Equinoxes Diagram and the one I used in class will come up, plus several more.
- We then watched three Video Clips as a simple review of Chapter 9 Lessons 1 & 2: The Planets Move, The Earth Moves and Planetary Orbits are Elliptical (all from Discovery Education)
- Each student was asked to complete their own Tree Map on Solstices and Equinoxes using pages 256 and 257 in their Science textbook. This took the remainder of the class time to complete.

FYI: First Nine Weeks Mid-Term Progress Reports go home today with all students in all grades.

Reminder that we have a Field Trip tomorrow from 11:30 until 2:30 at the Yadkin County Park for Environmental Field Day. For those students who were suppose to present their Experiment Thursday Experiments they have been moved to Friday. We will also be on an abbreviated schedule on Thursday to ensure that all three teachers see each class for a certain amount of time.
Also Thursday is our First PTO meeting of the year. 2nd and 3rd grade students will be performing as well as the WY Football Cheerleaders. The grade with the highest number of parents/students attending will receive a Pizza Party!! Come on Draughn Homeroom students... I know we all like pizza, so come out and support the PTO.
