Global Awareness

  •      Standard 2 – trying to counteract stereotypes, including culture and social
  •      Pride is okay, but we have to teach human spirit, and that it exists everywhere
  •      Making connections with the similarities and differences globally, between cultures
  •       Show them! Give them pictures to make other countries real and relevant.
  •       Math Problem of the day can use global current events
  •       Compare our community physical characteristic to others
  •       Virtual Field Trips

Current Events: Look at something that's dominating the news and apply it to what you are teaching.  (Use severe weather outbreaks and environmental disasters to illustrate everything from climate patterns to the logistics of coordinating relief efforts.)

Try playing Holiday Clay with your class to bring together multiculturalism and some tactile fun.

  • Students choose a holiday or cultural tradition from their personal or ethnic background and create a claymation scene (or sculpture) to represent it. Everything you need is included in the post: a material list, step-by-step instructions, proficiency level variations, and even Tech Tools to expand the game into the digital world.

Participate or host a world culture day-food, art, music, games, literature, language

BING - Even though this is primarily a search engine, it can be used in your daily classroom! I used it as morning work with EOG Question Stems. The students had to think of 3 questions from "Text", "Text to Self", and "Text to World" that had to do with the image. Then we would learn about the image and they would fill in any answers that pertained to their own questions. You can also use it with the Publisher document that is attached at the bottom of this page. It deals with geography, current events, facts, background knowledge, etc. The possibilities are endless! https://www.bing.com/
